Bipolar Disorder and Diabetes
We all know someone or have met someone with diabetes.  We also know that one of the problems with diabetes is depression.  Now if you know someone living with Bipolar Disorder, studies have found a link to diabetes.

According to Wikipedia Bipolar disorder , also known as manic depression , manic depressive disorder or bipolar affective disorder , is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a category of mood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated mood clinically referred to as mania or, if milder, hypomania . Individuals who experience manic episodes also commonly experience depressive episodes or symptoms, or mixed episodes in which features of both mania and depression are present at the same time. These episodes are usually separated by periods of "normal" mood , but in some individuals, depression and mania may rapidly alternate, known as rapid cycling . Extreme manic episodes can sometimes lead to psychotic symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations . The disorder has been subdivided into bipolar I , bipolar II , cyclothymia , and other types, based on the nature and severity of mood episodes experienced; the range is often described as the bipolar spectrum.  CLICK HERE to read the Wikipedia information.

The Canadian Journal of Psychiatry states; Several papers have reported higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2 in patients suffering from bipolar disorder (BD). The possible links between these 2 disorders include treatment, lifestyle, alterations in signal transduction, and possibly, a genetic link. To study this relation more closely, we investigated whether there are any differences in the clinical characteristics of BD patients with and without DM.  CLICK HERE to read the article written by:  Martina Ruzickova, MD, Claire Slaney, RN, Julie Garnham, RN, BN and Martin Alda, MD, FRCPC.

Diabetic Life is digging deeper on this topic because we also know someone who lives with Bipolar Disorder and have witnessed how this disease can reak havoc on the lives of family members as well.  It even has the potential to destroy the lives and careers of others due to the actions of the person who lives with Bipolar Disorder.

Concerned about Diabetic Neuropathy and other Complications?

A proven daily supplement will help dramatically!

Benfotiamine is a lipid-soluble form of thiamine or vitamin B1 that establishes beneficial and durable levels of active thiamine in your body at the cellular level. It is tested safe and clinical trials demonstrate that its use reliably:

~ Stops and reverses symptoms of neuropathy, eliminating the associated nerve pain.
~ Stops and reverses symptoms of retinopathy in the eye, preserving vision.
~ Reduces the incidence of nephropathy of the kidneys.
~ Protects the endothelial cells lining the blood vessels, promoting good circulation.

Benfotiamine was developed in Japan in the early 1960's to treat alcoholic neuritis. It was patented in the United States in 1962. Its application in the prevention of diabetic complications has been studied clinically for decades and it has been widely used in Asia since the 1960's and in Europe, especially Germany, since the late 1970's. Take Care of your Feet - from the NDEP
You can and you should take care of your feet!

Do you want to avoid serious foot problems that can lead to a toe, foot, or leg amputation? The "Take Care of Your Feet for a Lifetime" from the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) tells you how. It's all about taking good care of your feet.

Foot care is very important for each person with diabetes, but especially if you have:

~ Loss of feeling in your feet.
~ Changes in the shape of your feet.
~ Foot ulcers or sores that do not heal.

Nerve damage can cause you to lose feeling in your feet. You may not feel a pebble inside your sock that is causing a sore. You may not feel a blister caused by poorly fitting shoes. Foot injuries such as these can cause ulcers which may lead to amputation.

Keeping your blood glucose (sugar) in good control and taking care of your feet every day can help you avoid serious foot problems.

Selecting Foods for a Healthy Meal Plan - from the FDA & ADA

By following the government's Dietary Guidelines for Americans, you can promote your health and reduce your risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, certain types of cancer, diabetes, stroke, and osteoporosis. These diseases are leading causes of death and disability among Americans. Good diets can also reduce major risk factors for chronic disease-such as obesity, high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol. Your food choices, your lifestyle, your environment, and your family history all affect your well-being. It is important for everyone to follow the 10 Dietary Guidelines listed below. If you are at higher risk of having a chronic disease, it is especially important.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans include the following:

AIM FOR FITNESS . . .
Aim for a healthy weight.
Be physically active each day.

BUILD A HEALTHY BASE . . .
Let the Pyramid guide your food choices.
Choose a variety of grains daily, especially whole grains.
Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables daily.
Keep food safe to eat.

CHOOSE SENSIBLY . . .
Choose a diet that is low in saturated fat and cholesterol and moderate in total fat.
Choose beverages and foods to moderate your intake of sugars.
Choose and prepare foods with less salt.
If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.

Some people with diabetes use the Exchange Lists for Meal Planning. This system, established by the American Dietetic and American Diabetes associations, separates foods into six categories based on their nutritional makeup. People following this plan choose a set number of servings from each category daily, depending on their nutritional needs.

For detailed information about nutritional guidelines for people with diabetes. See the following links for more outstanding information from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and the American Diabetes Association:

Becoming Overweight or Obese
Many Americans are becoming overweight or obese. These conditions can lead to chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, cancer, and diseases of the
gallbladder, heart, and lungs. Such diseases can reduce the quality of life and can also lead to death. Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of the commonly used measures of obesity.

What is Body Mass Index (BMI)? BMI is a ratio of a person’s weight to height. BMI is commonly used to classify weight as “healthy” or “unhealthy.”

Internet:               Diabetic Life Goes Virtual Office

With the economy being stretched the way it is and the ever rising costs of maintaining offices as well as other associated costs to operate a non-profit, Diabetic Life will be focusing on the internet as its “Virtual Office”. We will still offer our same services, but this change will allow us to reach far more people and to enlist volunteers from around the United States and Canada. This new approach will assist Diabetic Life at greater levels and allow the entire volunteer staff to work from their homes in getting the word out through the internet and various news reporting agencies.

Diabetic Life will still provide the “Diabetic Life Magazine” (free on-line), “The Backpack of Life” program , the “Diabetic Life Kidz” program and the various fundraising events such as our Celebrity Pro-Am Hockey Weekend that features former NHL Players, our “Strike Against Diabetes” Bowling Event and the soon to be released "Bob & Marcel's Diabetic Life Show" - an internet TV Show about Diabetes and Life.

The cost effective benefits of this move to be internet based will also increase the ability for some of our teammates (sponsors) to reach more people than they might have in the past. Diabetic Life has a rapidly growing e-mail database and now the internet vehicle to help reach more people everyday and to help provide directions for diabetic awareness, education and support through teamwork. For a sneak peak of our upcoming and new web page that will direct you to specific location, CLICK HERE.

This change has already blessed us with volunteers in the Austin , Texas area, Southeastern Michigan and the San Diego, California area. We still need your support to make things happen and to keep helping as many people living with diabetes as possible. So if you want to be part of our growth, become a team member and help make a positive difference in the lives of those living with diabetes, contact us by CLICKING HERE.

Las Vegas Celebrity Pro-Am Hockey Weekend

These guys skated in the 2nd Annual Diabetic Life Benefit Hockey Game and we can not thank them enough for all of their heartfelt efforts. Although we did not have the hockey weekend this year (March of 2008), we are planning on having the event in 2009. The location is yet to be determined. There is growing interest and support to bring the weekend to Southeastern Michigan. Diabetic Life is opening in Michigan and will publish the first issue of Diabetic Life of Michigan in November 2008. Stay tuned for further developments.

Nationwide:     Diabetic Testing Supplies... Protect Yourself !!!
As with anything, there is always a certain amount of risk involved with everything we do in life. Living with diabetes certinally has its risks, so we don't need anyone else adding to it. As an organization who is always looking out for the best interest of ALL people living with diabetes, Diabetic Life has come up with some tips when it comes to getting your diabetic testing supplies through the mail.

First and foremost, check with your medical professional. They are treating you for your diabetes and can advise you first hand what you should be using.

Read the fine print with your supply contract. If you have any questions, call your insurance carrier. If you are uninsured, call the supply company and talk with them. If you still are unsure, call the Better Business Bureau or call your local Diabetes Educator. So many of these "diabetic supply companies" start out strong with big promises, but go out of business and then you are left without your supplies. Now you are back to square one and you do not desirve that.

Make sure that there are NO HIDDEN COSTS. A large number of these “Mail Order” companies have been known to surprise their clients with bills after they have received their supplies. This is when the stress takes over. You know that you need your supplies (and so do they) and if you don't pay them, your supplies stop coming and the stress builds.

Now that we have your attention... CLICK HERE to read the entire article with links to even more information.

Diet and Exercise
How many times have we heard or even said... "I'm going to lose weight and get in better shape". Ok, how is that working for you? Hopefully improvements were made, but let's face it, not everyone is successful or even stuck to their diet and exercise routines for very long. It's all about perseverance and your attitude. What do you really want? It's not going to come to you, you need to take control and make it happen. You are the only "You" that you will ever have. Be good to yourself and be here for the people that love you.

Worldwide:               MedFive Reduces Plaque
The MED FIVE "FULL SYSTEM" is a process that is designed to be able to dissolve pathological calcification (often referred to as plaque by doctors) by liquefying and removing the plaque from every cell of our arteries, veins and vessels and at the same time revitalizing them. MedFive can kill the bacteria that spread from the mouth throughout the rest of the body, improve the biochemistry of the cells, and stimulate our immune system. Working with their physicians and, as an example, amongst a wide range of other results, some individuals have experienced a reduction in cholesterol and blood pressure levels, allowing a decrease in the dosage of their prescription drugs. The reduction of metals and toxins from within the body and mouth have the potential to importantly impact a long list of diseases and illnesses, as more is learned every day about the use and applications of Med Five.

Because we have personally experienced the positive results of this amazing product, Diabetic Life has teamed up with MedFive. By purchasing MedFive and putting Diabetic Life or #85 in the reference box, Diabetic Life will receive a portion of the proceeds of the sale.
